Dunn's story begins in the Midwest (Illinois), where at the age of 18, he packed a few belongings into his car and headed west.
"I didn't have very much money, or anything really," he explains, "so I drove as far west as I could and just left my car in LA. I started hitchhiking from there and discovered a whole culture of artists and kids that hitchhike all over the west coast. I was sleeping on beaches and finding places to eat in churches or wherever. When you're hitchhiking alone on the road for hours, walking and waiting for a ride and thinking the whole time, you get spiritual. Everything slows down and you start to notice things. Sometimes it felt like living in slow motion."
